Dear Allen:
I just got back from Tangier three days ago, which is why I have not been in touch sooner. First I heard about the situation with Billy. [There] was a telegram sent to Tangier to call you or Alex Trocchi no number and quite impossible to make a long distance call from Tangier. Alex tried to get through to my hotel with no success, the whole communications system is foundering, a telegram I sent to Alex never arrived. So all I could do was take the next plane back to London. I have sent you two telegrams saying I would cover all expenses necessary and would be delighted to see Billy here in London. The situation in Palm Beach is obviously impossible.
I can’t thank you enough for your timely intervention without which the situation might have been a disaster. I don’t know what has happened in New York, but since I haven’t heard presume everything is now O.K.? Please let me know. I hope mother didn’t find out about it, she is worried enough as it is.
Tangier very depressing. Paul Lund died two months ago. Various other people you don’t know dead or dying. Paul Bowles is in Bangkok where he arrives on a wave of anti-Americanism and a 15 day visa commissioned to write a book on the city: 15,000 dollars which he has spent already traveling. Jane [Bowles] is in Tangier trying to decide what pills to take and sighing “Oh my God we’ll all be in jail”.. Everyone fears a sudden crack down on black market exchange but can not resign themselves to losing 20% of their money.
I am working hard as usual revising The Ticket That Exploded for the American edition. Don’t know how I will pay my income tax, I spend every cent I can get my hands on, seems like the cheap restaurants and hotels are no longer endurable and it costs more and more to live comfortably. I have taken a rather expensive flat in London which is exactly what I want and I hope to make this my permanent headquarters.
I am writing letter to Billy. My best to Peter [Orlovsky]
Love
Bill
